CERENA Workshop Series on Scientific Lab Equipment 2025

We invite you to join the series of practical workshops aimed at enhancing the skills of materials, chemicals, and mining engineers, focusing on key scientific lab techniques used in the field.

The workshops will start with a 30-minute presentation covering:

·An overview of the technique

·The type of data it generates

·Sample preparation and sample types

·Sample quantities required

·Strengths and limitations of each technique

SYMPOSIUM at FEUP - Mining the Future: Innovation, Technology, and Sustainability

The Symposium on Mining Engineering and Geo-Resources, part of the 6th Doctoral Congress in Engineering (DCE25), will be held at FEUP, Porto, Portugal, on June 30th and July 1st, 2025. Organized by PhD students from the PDEMGR program at FEUP, with support from CERENA-FEUP.

Topics for submission include (but are not limited to):

Advancing Mineral Resource Modeling with Digital Twin Technology

Mineral resource deposit models currently rely on manual processes, from drilling and handling core samples to chemical analyses and lithological identification. These labor-intensive procedures extend to geostatistical analysis, where experts describe the spatial distribution of geo-domains and mineral properties through variogram analysis and numerous simulations to address uncertainty. In complex geological environments, numerical methods often fail to effectively characterize the spatial distribution of boundaries between geological domains.

Seminar "Multiscale Modeling and Adsorption: Bridging Fundamental Understanding to Applications"

Abeer Mohtar is presenting this month's DEQTalk about "Multiscale Modeling and Adsorption: Bridging Fundamental Understanding to Applications".

DEQTalks are lectures organized by the Department of Chemical Engineering of Instituto Superior Técnico since 2017, inviting professors and researchers to talk about their research work. Some of the DEQTalks have been recorded and can be viewed here.

Seminar on Mine Waste Management

Seminar on Mine Waste Management organized by Patterson & Cooke, to explore technologies related to waste management, thickening, and slurry filtration.

❓ Are you interested in mine waste management?

❓ Do you want to learn more about existing processes in mining operations?

❓ Would you like to discover new areas to develop in your professional future?

CERENA's Seminar Series 'Next Generation Science - Building a Path to Sustainability'

In this seminar of the series ‘Next Generation Science: Building a Path to Sustainability'  Miguel Gomes will present his research: Exploring the Patterns of Drought Events in Southern Portugal: Geostatistical techniques combined with drought indicators like precipitation, soil moisture and groundwater levels show us how drought patterns have evolved over recent decades. This work provides insights into potential future drought risks for Southern Portugal.
