The three countries in the ISLANDS Atlantic project, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Sao Tome and Principe, are import heavy economies that lack the legislation, infrastructure and training to safely and sustainably manage the hazardous wastes that many imported products generate as they degrade. Illegal dumping, poorly enforced regulations and limited public awareness compound the problems associated with toxic waste. The SIDS will seek to control/limit the toxic chemicals and products arriving through legislation and training; safely manage those that are already in-country with better collection, storage and disposal systems; and incentivize private sector investment and innovation in the waste management sector. IST-ID and BCRC-SCRC Senegal will execute the project in the Atlantic region, while UNEP is the Implementing Agency.
